Teh George’s sister scored us VIP tickets to see the Colbert Report tonight. Everyone in there kept emphasizing that we are the last guests to be here during the reign of terror.

Man, I think I have a little crush on Stephen Colbert.

Anyway, we got to see a Toss Up with Jon Stewart, and high five-ed the man while he was praying with a #1 big hand.

We saw a scary life size Palin sticker across the street from Colbert.

Now, I am making cupcakes of Colbert’s face… ok, I lie.

I have redone the site (I wasn’t very pleased with the last incarnation, anyway) and postponed switching servers over. I did manage to switch the domain over.

In an effort to feel more productive, I’ve been knitting and crocheting small easy to finish projects, such as that scarf down there. I knitted a small scarf in stockinette knit and am finishing the ends with a crochet and a button hole. I also crocheted knitted buttons for it.

I tried to play some piano to the horror of my neighbors and I’ve been cooking. A lot. This is all just to say that the career change front is a little tough. I haven’t really advertised my skills, but now I find myself freelancing in design. It’s a lot tough.

Yesterday I went to get a guest pass at the local Gold’s Gym, and I am not that pleased. The work rooms are a little dark and depressing. I don’t want it to be frou frou pretty, but it looks depressing. AND I don’t know how to work some of the more scary looking machines. The machines I have worked with managed to be pretty self explanatory / I had someone to show me. These machines here, I have no idea how to use. I end up wandering around the place looking confused, lost, and little. I hate how you have to agree to a personal training session to get anyone there to show you anything. However, I am curious about the classes and I want to start using machines. : T I need something more aggressive than just running and cardio to keep the bulge off.

I am feeling a little frustrated these days. I am keeping really busy, but I don’t think the things I produce during the day are that meaningful to anyone but me. That doesn’t feel good.

From New York Styles Magazine, Women’s Fashion Fall 2008:

J.F.K., on the other hand, smelled the same as always: floor cleaner, jet fuel and cigarettes. Korean Air Flight 82 smelled, surprisingly, like little at all. I think I’m becoming anosmic to airplane smell. It used to mesmerize me. The smell of flight! Now it’s background radiation, undifferentiated. […]
We landed in Shanghai at 8:10pm. in the dark. As we taxied, I got ready for the transition. Everyone knows, though most people don’t think about it, that travel consists of a strange kind of olfactory gate: there is a very precise point, where you pass from the plane’s smell, the international sterile zone, to your destination’s smell. this is the moment you brain, not just your body, actually arrives. You enter Mumbai, and you smell a humid, gaseous thickness; San Francisco, a thin, dry astringency; Tokyo, plastic and sour cherries. (Nasal Passage by Chandler Burr)

I’m not sure what that smell was, but Narita airport has its own distinct smell. Japanese hospitals have that exact smell, also. (For most of my childhood I was dragged to various hospitals in Japan to visit my grandfather. Also I had a lot of family working there.) I don’t think it was sour cherries, though. It is something faintly office-y, but sweet. Like sweetened clean laundry… Not the smell of detergents but the laundry machines.

(And as another aside note, that idea might not be as far-fetched as it seems. I just remembered why I might associate a faint soured fruit smell with laundry. In Kagoshima at my grandmother’s house, she has a sunroom/roof that is enclosed by glass. They have a washer downstairs and they move the laundry up to dry. There, she also dries out plum so that she can pickle them and make home-made umeboshi. THAT is delicious and whenever I went up there in the summer, the heat, smell, and laundry would smell a certain way that wasn’t all that bad.)

The original point I wanted to make was that I didn’t feel anything about going to Japan until I actually arrived. This has never happened before. In the past, whenever I went to Japan I had a clear goal in mind. It was either to see family or take care of some documents. It was never “just to sight-see,” and I didn’t start doing that until recently. I felt happy to be getting away, but other than that i felt almost apathetic. That is until I stepped out of the plane through the terminal and was on our way to customs. The smell of the airport (and I spent a lot of time in this airport) WAS THE SAME… and reminded me of other office buildings in Japan. There was a quality there that was very much indescribable. At that moment I felt an overwhelming sentimentality and an euphoria to be there.

I have been terrible with my sleeping. I’ve been getting up everyday around 5pm – 7pm. I don’t think it is the jetlag as much as my unwillingness to change it. I just stopped giving a damn. This limits my choices of things to do. I have been spending it at home doing not much else.

Today I woke up around 5:30pm. I forced myself awake, since I could have very well just laid back down to sleep until 7pm. I was groggy and looking at websites when I came across an old blogger that I used to read. She was RAVING about a detox drink that she has first thing in the morning and before she sleeps that she found on recipe zaar. There are tons of raves on the site about this as well. So, I think: What the hell! It’s basically hot water, honey, and lemon. Needless to say that I tried it. I went jogging afterwards and came home to take a shower. Before I hit the shower, there was another mask that she was raving about. So, needless to say I tried it. I was on this honey kick. It was a mask of 1 Tbsp of honey, 1/4 Tbsp of olive oil, 1/2 Tbsp of sugar. Leave it on for 5 minutes and scrub it off in the shower.

While in the shower, I decide to use some of the Body Shop passion fruit sugar scrub. Let me just say here that the version I have does not look that purple inside. I bought this over a year ago, tried it once, and hated the smell. The smell was so strong and the moisturizer was so thick, it scented all my towels and my sheets. I couldn’t stand it. I thought I would scrub down and wash it off with Aveeno, thus off setting the scent and some of its properties.

I got out of the shower and put some green tea oil on my face (which I do quite often). After 10 minutes, my neck started getting itchy. My forehead was splotchy. I was sure it was the honey mask. However, a patch on my thigh was itchy too. WTF? And this area on my neck under/behind my ears – which wasn’t touched with anything.

UHG. WTF? I didn’t consume anything out of the ordinary. Just that drink and brown rice, onions, chicken, and eggs.

I have successfully submitted my thesis to the graduate school!

It involved me taking a two hour train ride and tromping ankle deep in rain mud. I ran all the way to the Philosophy building and then to the otherside of campus. I made it around in about 15 minutes. Just to give you a taste of how far it is, after all that running I did not want to run. On my way back, I had 17 minutes to make it back to the train station and it took me 20+ minutes to tromp all the way back from that side of campus.

My second reader finally got back to me. Yesterday. After I fell asleep around noon (yes, I pulled another all nighter to complete an upcoming food blog project). He contacts me around 2pm, which I read around 7pm. Fortunately, I think things might work out for me and I can go collect some signatures today… CAUSE TODAY IS THE LAST DAY TO SUBMIT A THESIS FOR GRADUATION.

Right. So I am taking care of superficial formatting stuff right now before I dash. If all goes well, I will be celebrating later tonight.

So… I was updating the site and my cable modem blows. I spent the last hours troubleshooting it and organizing the dirty cables underneath the desk I never use. DIRTY. I changed the co-axial cable, cat5 cable, restart the thing, restart my router, and etc.. Finally after speaking with couple of representatives, they are letting me bring it in instead of waiting a week for a tech. It’s been working really unreliably for the past couple of days. Actually, ever since I came back.

So, of course … here I am. I am updating and fixing my site up while in a public place waiting for 15+ minutes for them to call my number … after they told me that I couldn’t check my email. (They are now serving 602 at desk #3… I am 609!)

I was going to wait until later tonight to debut the site, but it won’t let me change the site back here at the public computer station.
